Did you know?
- According to the CDC, nine people in the United States are killed every day in crashes involving distracted drivers.
- 25% of all distracted drivers involved in fatal crashes are adults aged 25-34 (NHTSA).
- 17% of distracted drivers found to be using their cell phones during fatal crashes are aged 15-20 (NHTSA).
- Distracted driving is on the rise, with violations increasing by 24% between 2022 and 2023. This is largely because many drivers still consider distractions like texting or calling to be socially acceptable.
- Younger drivers (ages 15-19) are disproportionately involved in fatal crashes related to distractions.
- Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds significantly increases the risk of a crash.
- Drivers who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
- A study from the University of Utah found that the reaction time of a teenager using a cell phone is comparable to that of a 70-year-old woman not using a phone.
- 42% of high school students across the United States admit to texting or emailing while driving.
The #ButNotWhileDriving campaign is a powerful initiative that focuses on the critical issue of distracted driving. By equating the dangers of distractions with those of driving under the influence, it effectively underscores how serious this issue is. This campaign empowers individuals to take action and be part of the solution by sharing the hashtag #BNWD in their mobile signatures. #ButNotWhileDriving also educates drivers about the severe consequences of distracted driving, helping to change attitudes and behaviors on this critical issue.
We all have a role to play in spreading this important message, and you can help by adding the hashtag #ButNotWhileDriving (#BNWD) to your mobile device signatures.
Together, we can alert others to the risks of distractions behind the wheel and encourage everyone to adopt safer driving habits. Let’s make our roads safer for all of us!
