Re: AB 2073 – Driver Records: Points: Distracted Driving Courses

Dear Chair Friedman:

I am writing a behalf of We Save Lives.org to express support for AB 2073 (Patterson), that allows ticketed distracted drivers to remove a violation point off their license for an electronic device violation if the driver successfully completes a distracted driving course that is approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Distracted driving is a choice and those choices threaten all of us each time we travel on our roadways. I know this first hand. I have a broken back as the result of a distracted driver hitting me from behind and totaling both our cars.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles reported over 426,000 cell phone and texting convictions in 2013, thus proving the importance of the legislation. Whether a driver is distracted from a phone, or something else, there needs to be resources out there for those repeat offenders to change their reckless driving behavior.

AB 2073 recognizes the need to discipline individuals who repeatedly violate the law, while also giving those same individuals an opportunity to fix their wrongdoings and learn from their mistakes through a distracted driving course.

We encourage you to vote YES for AB 2073. Help stop distracted driving!

Sincerely,

President, We Save Lives
